Complete a Bachelor’s Degree (4 Years)

This career path begins with a four-year undergraduate degree. Most aspiring veterinary radiologists major in biology, animal science, or a related field. Building a strong foundation in sciences like chemistry, anatomy, and microbiology is critical. 

  • Focus coursework on life sciences, mathematics, and laboratory research.
  • Gain animal care experience to strengthen vet school applications. 

Earn a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) Degree (4 Years)

Earning a DVM requires another four years of intense study. Accredited veterinary colleges provide both classroom instruction and hands-on clinical training. 

Veterinary Radiology Postgraduate Training

1-Year Internship

While not always mandatory, most candidates opt for a one-year rotating internship in general or specialty practice. This experience develops advanced clinical skills and exposes doctors to the demands of specialty care.​

Radiology Residency Program (3-4 Years)

Residency is required for specialization in veterinary radiology. Residents work alongside board-certified radiologists, interpreting studies and participating in research.

What to Expect During Residency

Residency structure varies but usually includes 1–1.5 hours daily of direct radiologist supervision, regular case rounds, and additional teaching responsibilities in later years.​

Upon residency completion, candidates are eligible to sit for the American College of Veterinary Radiology (ACVR) board exam. This comprehensive test evaluates clinical skills, imaging interpretation, and theoretical knowledge.​
